It’s Not Too Late
One of the greatest tragedies of the human experience is that it often takes calamity to remind us that we ought to treasure each day of our lives. When we hear of death we lament, “Life is too short.” Yet, in the absence of tragedy, we go back to living on autopilot, regretting yesterday or worrying about tomorrow. In the meantime the present passes us by.
Guilty here.
The days turn into weeks and the weeks into months, and then one soft spring day, as we breathe in the untainted air, we take a look back at the road most traveled and sigh.
The mortgage was paid. The dog did not die. The kids were not crushed. We did not go hungry.
What if it really is true that 95% of all things we worry about never happen?
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” - Matthew 6:34
Do you find yourself constantly asking, “Why do I worry? Why can’t I just let go?”
Guilty again.
Could it be because our security is threatened and we’re afraid? Or could it be that we’re having a hard time releasing control? Christ knew that fear lay at the heart of worry and lovingly took the pressure off us by reminding us that we have neither the power to control the future, not the ability to add a single hour to our life.
Christ wants us to settle the nagging question of who is in control once and for all. He says, “I got you, sweet daughter of mine.”
Take a look around. Enjoy the sprouting spring flowers, frame your two-year-old’s masterpiece, and go ahead and have some cheesecake. Live one day at a time, resting secure in the arms of the One who holds you dear.
God invites you to enjoy the present.
