Serving Money: Where to draw the line

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

 Matthew 6:24 ESV

This verse never fails to be a slap in the face. It’s a harsh reality that cannot be negotiated nor compromised. You cannot serve both God and money. They are mutually exclusive. So how do you know which you serve? Although the verse is black and white, in exploring our relationship with money we encounter some grey areas. Money is necessary to function in society. Money can be used for good. Money can bring influence and responsibility, which can in turn positively influence countless people. However, money is a cruel master because it is both the problem and the solution. I think the difference between appreciating money and serving money is rather small. It’s a seed planted in the soul and it grows at a painfully slow pace, just as a plant would. Gradually, it takes over your service to the Lord. Money becomes the solution to everything rather than God’s word. Money doesn’t bombard your soul, it seduces your soul. It distracts from, and eventually prevents, a genuine relationship with Jesus.

Because of greed’s slow moving mutiny, the Bible tells us to be “on guard.” This could mean constantly questioning your motives, or maybe running from places you know you will be tempted. Whatever it means for you, actively examine your soul so that you may exterminate any sign of service to money while the seed is a mere seed. Ignoring maintenance for too long will only make it more difficult.
