Dressing for Success or Succ-sex?

Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.

Proverbs 11:22 (New International Version)

Knowledge to Build On

In the Old Testament, pigs were unclean & untouchable animals, so the idea of putting something as extremely valuable and beautiful as a gold ring in a pig’s snout was crazy.  To show no discretion means to be without taste, tact & grace.  It seems a bit extreme, comparing an indiscreet woman to a pig, but it sure does put God’s perspective on the subject into place.

God has set some rather high standards for women.  We are to be noble of character, hard working, giving, crafty, wise and modest.  It’s a tall order, but in true God fashion has its purpose.  He’s put these expectations in place to keep us out of compromising situations.  If you think that dressing provocatively is not YOUR problem, think again.

The decisions you make each morning in your closet could have more of an impact than you know on someone’s marriage, friendship, employment status or their walk with God.

Life in the Now

I haven’t always been the most discreet with my clothing in the past.  When I was 19 I remember my store manager getting us all ready for a corporate visit.  We stayed late the night before, making sure that everything was in its place.  Before leaving for the evening she gave us all our final assignments, “Kala, short skirt, v-neck top, customer service in the morning.”  I happily complied with the request.  As with most things, my perspective has changed with age.

Charm & beauty may have helped to get you where you are today, but I remind you that charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting.  In today’s job market you need more than a pretty face to stay employed.  Be wise at work and in your everyday life.  Avoid dressing for Succ-sex:

  • If your pants are so tight that you might have to stop at Walgreens on the way home to buy Monistat, you probably shouldn’t wear them.
  • The only girls people in the office should be seeing are the ones you birthed.  Keep your cleavage out of office.
  • Super Short may have its place in fashion, but knee length is more appropriate.
  • If you have to get a bikini wax to wear low rise anything – they are too low!  Do you really think it’s appropriate to bend down and show us all your booty crack or thong?

Think About It

All joking aside.  When you’re getting dressed in the morning who are you thinking about?  Your clothes do not define who you are, your character does; dressing inappropriately is a direct reflection of your character.

Talk About It

Father in heaven, thank you for this body.  Help me and all of my sisters to make wise decisions so that we are not stumbling blocks in each others lives.
