How Are You Showing Up in the Market Place?
I remember my very first real interview right before graduating college. I was so excited! At the time, I was working at the outlet malls and was able to afford a grey skirt suit and paired it with a royal blue shirt. I felt powerful, fashionable, and so mature to be heading off to my first interview with a degree in hand!
I showed up only to find the manager who was interviewing me was wearing cute little crop pants, a fitted top, and a tattoo choker. We looked like exact opposites, and I even remember her saying, “Wow, I feel a little underdressed!”
Not a good move! I did not do my research; therefore, I did not show up on brand!
Here’s the point:
As we dive into our sixth principle, fashion, we are not pushing any kind of trend on you or the ten best ways to dress. Instead, we are focusing on a few key points:
Knowing your worth
Showing up as an Ambassador of Christ
Being relevant to the marketplace, community, business, or purpose God has called you to
Throughout the Bible, Jesus walked with everyday people just like you and me, and He was always relevant to the crowd He was talking to. So, as you go out into the world to make disciples using your gifts and talents for His glory, be aware of your audience and how you are representing God in the way you dress.
Inner work always produces outer work. And if we are to be leaders in the marketplace, community, church, and beyond, how we show up can make a big difference in how we communicate and how we are perceived by others. Your first impression can make a difference between who listens and who doesn’t. So let’s show up as Ambassadors of Christ and remember that we are made in His Image.
