How to Dress Like Royalty

It’s Monday morning, and here I go scanning through my closet for what to wear. I review the events on my calendar that day.  Who will I be meeting and what will I be presenting? As I look through my choices, I ask myself, “Am I sending the right message of who I am in Christ and how I want to be represented? Is it appropriate for the situation and reflecting the position and influence I have in my work and community?”

In today’s culture, we are moving toward a more relaxed and casual way of dressing. While I am thankful I no longer feel the need to wear panty hose and high heels, I want to be attentive that I do not take the casual culture to an extreme.

As a “good” Christian woman does, I read about the Proverbs 31 woman, as a guide for a woman of noble character. Full disclosure: this woman is perfect. While I try not to feel the pressure to be all the things she all the time, she does provide insight for how to dress as a woman of influence in the community. Verse 22 informs us that she wears fine linen and purple.

As I think about this scripture, I laugh and wonder, if this means I have to wear the most expensive clothes, like I’m royalty.  Surely not! But how can I take her example and make it relevant today?  As I read more about her in the previous verses, I learn of the hard work she provides for her family, business, and community.  With all that going on, she still took the time to ensure she was presenting herself well in the best she had.

For me, that means I will put forth the effort to present myself well, with my best for the event and situation. It means that I will dress appropriately, and keep it fresh and updated to the best of my ability.  I don’t have to break the bank, but I can update a little by adding or throwing out a one thing in my wardrobe each season.

As I think about keeping it fresh this season, I am staying true to my unique style, but slightly stepping  out of my comfortable box. I’ve added a little floral, which if you know me, you know this is a reach for me.  For example, I will find a floral top that I can wear with denim for the weekends, but with a jacket for a business event during the week. Its fresh,  suitable to the season,  and can be worn appropriately for any occasion on my calendar.

1.      What is your mindset when choosing what you will wear each day?

2.      What do you need to change to give you fresh perspective to dress as a woman of influence?

3.      Reflect on one or two things you could do to ensure you are dressing to be the best of your ability to represent well each day.

“she is dressed in fine linen and purple”
