What If…
What if I told you that your dream is not about you? Would you believe me?
Now, what if I told you that God is just waiting for you to pursue your dreams because your dream is really about your purpose and legacy?
What if? Got your attention?
Think about this: God has commanded us all to go into the world and make disciples (Matt. 28:19). I believe your dream is the “how” of doing this. It may be building a building, raising a family, starting a ministry, taking care of the elderly, or speaking out at work right from your cubicle. Whatever that thing is that makes your heart go pitter-patter is the very reason God created you!
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10 NIV).
When we start to believe the lie that our dreams are selfish, we begin to feel as if we have no purpose and ultimately live in disobedience to the very reason God gave us breath. It’s a downward spiral that brings death to our spirit as we try to make those around us comfortable by not pursuing our dreams. In fact, we neglect the lives we were originally trying not to make uncomfortable by pursuing our dreams.
You lose, and so do they.
Think about this: the miracle at Gilgal was performed for a greater purpose than merely getting the Israelites across the Jordan. It was also a sign to all the peoples that God was powerful. It was a symbol and a testament for generations to come—a legacy. It wasn’t just about the children of Israel. Joshua 4:20–24 reminds us this is true:
And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.” (NIV)
You are a dreamer! Yes, you are. You may have lost sight of your dreams or let them go for a while, but no matter what season of life you are in, you were created on purpose and for a purpose, and it’s wrapped up in your dream.
So don’t stop dreaming or continue to believe the lie that your dream is selfish. Instead, start pursuing your dreams by taking one dream step today. Because your dream is not just about you; it’s about your purpose and legacy for generations to come.
