I Can’t Believe I Have Been Given This Opportunity
God-given opportunities help fulfill our dreams.
One of the six core principles of Created Woman is Dreams. As stated on the website, “We believe that God has given each of us a God-sized dream – one that will not only change our lives, but those around us for the better. Our dreams are not just about us, but about our purpose and our legacy.”
I personally believe that some people’s dream start as early as childhood, and reaches fruition in their adult life. Other people come to the realization later in life that they have a dream inside of them that needs to be fulfilled. Other times, dreams just sort up pop up at some point in our life to fulfill a purpose God has for us in that season. Such was my case.
Looking back, I recall a time when the scripture in Jeremiah stood out to me very vividly: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: “Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you” (Jeremiah 30:2 NLT).
Though this instruction from the Lord was to Jeremiah, I took it personally. I bought a composition notebook from Walmart and began writing down circumstances occurring in my life and pouring out my emotions about them. But, mainly I wrote down the things I learned about the circumstance and how to respond to it through the scriptures. As I wrote, I actually wrote in good sentence form, scratching out and rearranging the material to make it readable as though I was writing for an audience, not just for myself.
A few years down the road after I began journaling, one day a person said to me, “I believe your testimony is going to go near and far.” I am certainly not one to take everything I hear at face value, so I questioned what had been spoken to me, and prayed a lot about the meaning of it.
My prayer was, “Lord, I understand how my testimony can go near; after all, I teach classes at church, in the county jails and Federal prison in our area, and I always try to include a testimony of what the Lord is doing in my life as a means of encouragement to others. But, I don’t know how it could possibly go far; after all, I have no platform or means in which to deliver it.”
So, I put it on the backburner. However, quite surprising to me, there came a time through a chain of events, that the things I had written in my notebooks, began to make their way on Christian websites and even in published devotional books. My thanks go out to my daughter, Heather, founder of Created Woman, and to Lynn Donovan Ministries, for providing me with the platform for my testimony to go far.
Did I always have a dream of writing? I can’t say that I did, but I believe the Lord wanted to use what I had written in those notebooks to help others. And then, a desire and dream for writing began to materialize in me. The more I wrote, the more I wanted to write.
My philosophy about my writing is derived from a lady I heard speak at a conference about wanting to publish a book, but she didn’t feel qualified. Finally, she came to the conclusion, “I may not be the best writer in the world, but I believe I have something worthwhile to say that will help others.” And, isn’t helping others what it’s all about.
I can’t believe I have been given this opportunity.
1. When did your dream start – childhood, midlife, or a particular season unexpected?
2. What opportunities have been given to you to help you fulfill your dreams?
3. Describe how Jeremiah 30:2 could play a part in visualizing your dream?
This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: “Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.”
(Jeremiah 30:2 NLT)
