Stepping Away From Relationships That Delay Your Healing
I think that one of the hardest parts about moving on is having to let go of some of the people attached to the situation. It’s not that they are horrible people, it’s just that some relationships are not healthy. If we want to be healed walk forward into healthy relationships and have healthy communication, with healthy outlooks and responses, we have to keep distractions to a minimum.
Looking back, there have been several times when I was asking God to heal me from emotional brokenness that I was struggling with. On one hand I was holding on to His word in Jeremiah 30:17 that says, "’But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD", while on the other hand I was letting toxic relationships suck the purpose out of me.
I was in a tug-o-war with myself. I knew what God’s word said. I knew that if I repented for letting others' demands on my time and energy take the focus off of God in my life, then He would be faithful to forgive me and heal me.
I also knew that if I decided to follow Him and give Him full permission to work on me, that I had a lot to let go of. It’s like when you pick up two shirts that you love equally… but one of them clearly doesn’t fit. The right choice is clear, but the ability to choose it only comes from trusting His plan. The less junk we have laying around, the quicker God can start the work in us. The more people that we disconnect from that we have unhealthy attachments to, the more God can heal. If you’re having a tough time disconnecting from those relationships you can always say, “It’s not you, it’s me.”
