Modesty is not a Diet, It’s a Way of Life

The Random House Dictionary describes modesty as: noun

1)    The quality of being modest; freedom from vanity, boastfulness, etc.

2)    Regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress, etc.

To me modesty means saving the most precious parts of yourself for "The One". It means not showing the world all of your goods. To me seeing someone, male and female, being modest is the most attractive and beautiful thing ever. I just want to go up to them and thank them because in a world where every thought and image is posted, shared, and tweeted, it is hard to find someone who isn't sharing everything with everyone. Modesty isn't just about what you wear it's also what you say and do, it's all of you. Some people find dressing modestly easier than speaking modestly. I, for example, find speaking modestly and dressing modestly equally as hard because I grew up in a home where it was taught after potty training. I wasn't a very talkative child so I listened and learned how to speak with respect to my audience and God's word.

Modest is easiest to be when you have confidence in yourself and in God's hand in your life. 2 Corinthians 3:4-5 says, “Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.”

Since the physical is what is seen first by the eye modesty is best shown by our clothing. Your clothing must show the self-control that you are working so hard for. So, everything in moderation; not too short and not too tight. Your clothing should show who you are from the inside out, which is why everyone has their own particular style.

In my own walk of modesty I’ve learned an easy way to keep myself in check: an accountability partner. Your partner can be anybody who you trust to give you honest feedback about not only your wardrobe choices but also your word choices. Someone who will help you grow as a Believer. Your parents, spouse, church family, siblings and even your children can be a blessing to your walk. Where wardrobe is concerned do the Three Step Check before leaving. Is what I’m wearing:

- Too Short?

- Too Tight?

- Does it portray a positive message about me?

If it passes this checklist you are ready to go!

But remember, Modesty isn’t just your appearance, it must be like your love for Jesus; Body, Mind, and Spirit.
