From dream to reality: God is a God of details

{Excerpt from book, Now, While You Are Single: Walking Out Your Purpose Before You Say 'I Do"}

  Before that faith was realized in Sarah though, she did what many of us do; she attempted to force God’s promise to come true. For years Abraham and Sarah waited patiently for God to fulfill His promise of a child. But after a while Sarah felt the need to help God fulfill His promise, and concocted her own plan. She told her husband to sleep with her maidservant.

     Now I don’t know about you, but I am married, and I would certainly never let my husband sleep with a maidservant, or anyone else. But Sarah was desperate to have a child, and when we are desperate we do desperate things. Often, the actions we take are irreversibly damaging to us, as well as others, all because we forced a dream to happen outside of God’s timing.

     Sarah learned that lesson the hard way.

     Agreeing to Sarah’s plan, Abraham had a son with the maidservant, Hagar, and of course Abraham loved his son like any father would. But because Abraham and Sarah disobeyed the Lord by taking things into their own hands, the child he had with Hagar was not a blessing to them. God told Hagar in Genesis 16:11-12 that her son would “be like a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him.”

     God had promised Abraham he would be the Father of many nations, and Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar, would be no different. From Ishmael, the lineage of the Arabian peoples was born, and today they populate the Middle East, where so much hostility and war has been waged, just as God predicted. (Genesis 25: 12-18)

     Many times I have seen Christians receive a promise from God, only to go about making their own plans as to how that promise would be fulfilled. It’s as if they knew they heard from God but didn’t expect God to finish what He started. They seem to think that God can speak and produce the vision, but that He can’t organize the details.

     Christians will take the dream God gave them and run with it, but then will begin to plan the details of how, when, and where God’s promise will be fulfilled, not realizing they themselves are blocking God’s own plan of execution.

     God always has a plan.

     When you attempt to force the promise of God to come true like Sarah and Abraham did, it will often hurt others as well as you. It can break apart relationships, and families. It can have far reaching effects.

   After Ishmael was born Sarah became very bitter towards Hagar, so bitter, that she couldn’t even stand the sight of Hagar – even though the plan had all been her own! Sarah banished Hagar to the wilderness, where she had to live alone and raise her son.

     By attempting to force her dream to come true, Sarah hurt a lot of people including her own family. She placed blame on an innocent child, and produced chaos in the lives of many. The world is still paying for her mistake to this very day.

     God did keep Hagar and Ishmael safe however, being a Good God, and the Bible says that God was with Ishmael as he grew up. (Genesis 21:20)

     So know that when God gives you a dream and plants it in your heart, He will in time, show you how to bring it to fruition. Stay faithful, and you will see your dreams come true through God’s perfect plan.
