#AustinFashionWeek Kickoff: Speakeasy

Last night’s Austin Fashion Week Kickoff event marks the beginning of a week of fashion shows and events highlighting the talents and efforts of those dedicated to art of fashion.  Created Woman team members, Aysa Province and Julie Fox, joined hundreds of other fabulously dressed individuals from all areas of the industry.

As part of last night’s event, Mash Up Teams were invited to share their photos and celebrate their work. The teams consist of photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, models, stylists and designers who come together to create one artistic look. There were numerous entries this year and by people’s choice voting, only ten teams were chosen as AFW Mash Up Finalists.

One of the finalists we met last night was Shavanthe of team “Synergy.” Shavanthe is a local clothing designer.  The look she created was African inspired. Her goal in designing is to bring other cultures together with different prints and patterns. This is Shavanthe’s first time participating in AFW and she is thrilled to be a part of it.

Mandy Hernandez is the makeup genius behind Mash Up Team “Aura.”  When asked about what she loves about her job, Mandy said “I love meeting new faces and challenges. I love taking looks from design concepts and turning them into reality.” Mandy is also the lead makeup artist for this year’s Top Austin Model competition.  Be sure to see Mandy’s and Julie’s work at the Top Austin Model finale on Monday, April 13th.

The other part of last night’s event included a showcase of looks through the decades.  Stylists were chosen and given a decade to portray in one look.  Urban Betty Salon was on site to do hair and FaceKandy provided makeup.  Once the models were put together, they spent the evening showing off their looks throughout the party.

Adriana Morfitt, of The Gold Atlas, was one of the stylists chosen to style a look.  Her decade was 1930’s and was put together with clothing from the Austin Antique Mall.  The accessories were provided by local jewelry designer, Suzanna Dai.  Adriana mentioned “Styling for me started with being obsessed with fashion. One day I decided to start a blog.  I had been working so much that I needed an outlet.”  Adriana loves music, festivals and claims to “be all over the place.”  She tries to bring all of her loves together as inspiration for her looks. She was so excited to part of AFW this year!

What a fantastic evening! Looking forward to the upcoming events and all the amazing fashion!
