Called to Create: Staying True to Your God-Given Design
There I was again, finding myself enamored with the beauty surrounding me as I climbed the mountains of Estes Park, Colorado. You can’t help but feel God’s presence as the light from the mountain tops bounces around and illuminates the vibrant colors of the fall leaves. The air you breathe in feels clean and the rivers sparkle. I smile as something in me feels very fulfilled by God sharing his beauty and a part of who He is with me.
It’s the same sense of inspiration and fulfillment I feel when I’m designing and creating in my daily life. Whether it’s through home design or fashion, I love to create and to take things and put them together in a way that puts beauty back into the world. I believe our God loves to make beautiful things also, and because I was created in His image, that is something that is truly a part of me. In the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, God is designing and creating. He is intentional about His design of the earth, and He fashions mankind in His very own image.
Fashion for me has always been a way to express who I am and how I see beauty. It is how I start my day with intention, choosing to take care of and to care for myself, so that I can show up as my best self and pour into others. It is also a heart check for me. Proverbs 27:19 says, “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart” (NIV). Am I speeding through life focused on checking off all my to-dos? Or am I being intentional about creating beauty, joy, harmony, and confidence wherever God has placed me? The enemy will always try to put feelings of shame around beauty. Of course, there are distorted truths of what real beauty is in the world we live in, but if the enemy can get us to believe the lie that we are not worthy or valuable in this way, then our belief about who God says we are will be in question also, and we can’t fully be who God has created us to be. And let’s be honest, God is not ashamed of beauty! He loves to show off his beauty in morning sunrises, evening sunsets, clear blue oceans, and the vibrant colors of all four seasons.
Of all the beautiful things created in this world, you are God’s most beautiful creation. You are his daughter designed intentionally to reflect a part of Him in a way that only you can reflect. When we show up well for God and for others, we honor Him in a way that will bless many. Our love of fashion and all other passions we as creatives love are interests that have been placed within us. They are gifts He has created for us to use to reflect who He is in our own unique ways!
