Do You Bend to the Trend?

We are called by God to point to Jesus in every aspect of our life, including fashion.

“Where did you get that?” That question is music to my ears. I love having a piece of clothing, shoes, jewelry, purse, or lipstick color that receives that comment. It opens up conversation, which for me is a fun adventure. My friend manages a hospital gift shop. I don’t call it a hospital gift shop. I call it a boutique. In the boutique I have found unique clothes, gifts, soap, greeting cards, and the list goes on. When I’m asked, “where did you get that?” when wearing something from the boutique; I point people to the boutique, which in turn benefits the hospital. The mission of the hospital is a Christian ministry of healing. It gives me the opportunity to be an influence for the cause of Christ. Created Woman has a Faith + Fashion Box and other fashion items. Yes, fashion can be used for the cause of Christ. How fun is that?!

I saw a reel recently on Instagram with Drew Barrymore. By the way Drew Barrymore is one of my favs. I pray for her. In the reel, she was responding to a comment that someone made about Mayim Bialik wearing the same blazer while co-hosting Jeopardy. Culture tells us that we can’t wear the same thing twice. That if we wear the same clothes more than once, we are not on trend. That’s unrealistic. Who can measure up to that? In fact, who wants to? I don’t. We have a choice. Are we going to bend to the trend, or are we going to be the trend setters? Romans 12:2 tells us not to copy the behavior of the world. I don’t bend to the trend.

My fashion style has always been classic with a bit of trend. I love denim. It’s a staple in my closet. There are some trendy items that enhance my style, and other trends definitely do not. I want to feel confident, and if something is on trend, but I don’t feel confident, it’s not for me. I have fashion items that aren’t on trend, or in the season, but it doesn’t stop me from wearing them. I call those “dig deep” looks. Dig deep looks mean going shopping in my closet and choosing pieces that I haven’t worn in a long time. Blouses, jeans, or jackets that bring back fun memories that put a smile on my face when I look in the mirror. Why don’t I bend to the trend? Not every trend looks good on me. Confidence overrides trend for me. 2 Corinthians 3:4-5 says that my confidence comes from Christ. I chose fashion that represents that confidence.

  1. What is the item(s) in your closet that makes you feel most confident? Your go to piece.

  2. What is a fashion fail that makes you burst out laughing? Can you find a picture and tag @createdwoman on Instagram just for fun?

  3. Do you think your fashion choices make a positive impact for the cause of Christ? Why or why not?

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

(Romans 12:2 NLT)

“We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.”
(2 Corinthians 3:4-5 NLT)
