I Fight Authority, Authority Always Wins

Jesus took wounds and died on the cross for our sins and for our healing. HE gave us the authority to pray for those around us to be healed.

I have been a John Mellencamp fan since I was a teenager. I have seen him at least four times in concert. One of my favorite John Mellencamp songs is the “Authority Song.” Some of the lyrics say, “I fight authority, authority always wins.” When I think of that song, I think of the authority that Jesus gave us, like it says in Mark 16:15-18. The authority to lay hands on the sick and declare and claim the healing power of Jesus. By walking in and through His grace, we experience healing, strength, peace and restoration ultimately bringing life to others in our family and community.

I was at the front desk of the hospital talking to one of my volunteers. A young woman with her less than a year-old daughter walked up and asked about going to a doctor. It was 5pm and I told her the clinic was closed. I could see her countenance change. Her daughter had a fever and a rash. I looked in the young woman’s eyes and asked, “would you like me to walk you to the Emergency Room?” She said “Yes, please.” As I was walking with her, I looked at the blue-eyed baby girl and smiled and she smiled right back. I stopped in the hallway and asked her Momma, “can I pray for your baby girl?” Her Momma said, “Of course.” I asked if I could touch her baby girl’s foot and she nodded yes. I prayed for God’s healing power on the baby girl in the name of Jesus. Then I put my arm around her Momma and prayed for the Holy Spirit to comfort her. Momma looked me in the eyes with a tear and said, “Thank you so much.”

I started walking back down the hallway to my office and I saw a woman walking and then looking back at me more than twice. I called out to her, “Hi, may I help you?” She said, “well, if you are throwing up prayers, you can pray for my Grandma.” I asked if her Grandma was in the hospital. She said, “Yes, I’m going to her room right now.” I said, “I’ll follow you. I’d love to pray for your Grandma.” As we were approaching her Grandma’s room her Grandpa came out and let us know that she was being taken care of by the clinical staff. The woman said, “Well if you want to come back later and pray for her, that would work.” I said, “let’s pray right now.” I grabbed Granddaughter and Grandpa’s hands and prayed for Grandma. They both thanked me.

It’s God’s job to do the healing and my opportunity to be obedient to pause and pray like it says in Matthew 9:35-38. What if I didn’t stop in the hallway and pray for the blue-eyed baby girl and her Momma? The Granddaughter with the Grandma in the hospital wouldn’t have seen me and asked me to pray for her Grandma. I am so honored and thankful that God gives me opportunities to pray for others in the name of Jesus and believe and declare that they are healed. I have seen the healing power of God more times than I can count. I know HE is Our Healer and I’m humbled, excited, and passionate about praying for others. I trust God and know that He is thrilled to heal His people here on earth or in heaven.

1.      Do you have a prayer request for yourself or someone else to be healed? Go to createdwoman.net/prayer and fill out a prayer request card. We would love to pray for you.

2.      Share a time when you have seen the healing power of God in your life or another’s life.

3.      Have you been disappointed that God did a healing for someone in heaven instead of here on earth? God isn’t afraid of your feelings, good or bad. Take some time and have a conversation with God letting him know how you feel. Give God an opportunity to heal your heart from that disappointment.

“Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So, pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

(Matthew 9:35-38 NLT)

“He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

(Mark 16:15-18 NLT)
