A Mary Poppins Amount
We Are Enough
I’d hardly consider myself a makeup artist—wishful and intrigued, and perhaps hopeful. I enjoy the process of applying make-up, especially when I’m not in a hurry. I’m pretty basic though: concealer, foundation, blush, shadow, liner, mascara & lips. My latest fixation is how to emphasize and enhance my brows—a game changer for sure! And, thanks dress rehearsals and recitals, my skills aren’t completely terrible at making eyes “pop” under stage lighting. With last week’s recital fresh in my mind, I’m still a bit obsessed with eye shadow and highlighters.
Ever think about how we use shadow and light to create an illusion or draw attention to one specific area? Eye shadow shapes the eye to appear dramatic or softer, larger or smaller. One of my newest additions is highlighter, used in the inside corner or underneath my brow. And, let’s be real; you may notice when your girl has missed her mark—or is wearing too much!
Enough makeup seems like an amount on Mary Poppins’ scale. She’d likely measure things like balance, harmony, light, modesty, and contentment with that “super-calla-fragile-istic” scale and the result would always be: Enough. Enough shadow and light. Opposites. Both necessary for us to see, yet how much of each exactly?
As followers of Jesus, we may wrestle from time to time with questions like, “Am I studying enough? How long do I need to pray each day? When will I get it right? How does God really feel about me? Am I enough?”
It’s kind of like being in a dark room unexpectedly. Those split seconds it takes for your eyes to adjust to pitch black? You remind yourself calmly, “It’s ok. Blink. Blink again. Now, breathe.” Before long, a few more blinks and you detect a crack of light from under the door. You start to relax as you make out shapes. Shadows. They’re just outlines of other things under just the right amount of light.
Just enough.
Are you pursuing a relationship with Jesus daily? Do you take to heart the scriptures you read? Do you pray for guidance in your daily decisions, and then obey? Then, the answer to all of your questions is enough.
Your faith in Jesus’ death on a cross, his burial, and his resurrection MAKES you ENOUGH. Here, read it like this: You are enough because of Jesus.
That settles it.
It is finished.
His words, not mine.
Reflection
Are you struggling to maintain balance with your relationships—your connection with Christ?
Does it seem like a dark season, like you’re waiting for your eyes to adjust?
Because Jesus completes you, describe how being enough also sets you free.
Goals
Consider adding 3 Bible verses or truths to your daily makeup routine as a reminder that YOU are ENOUGH.
“…and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.”
(Colossians 2:10, NIV)
“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situations I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound…”
(Philippians 4:11-12, ESV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’ “
(2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV)
