The Gift of You: Creating a Space for Self-care
“How are you?”
“Oh, I’m fine.”
This is a common everyday conversational exchange with our standard answer that we often give or hear. But there will be days when things can get a little rough emotionally, physically, mentally or spiritually. As women we sometimes tend to put our own needs last and taking care in these areas are not always a priority for us. Women carry many roles – mother, career woman, wife, sister, daughter – that is spent giving bits and pieces of ourselves to those roles that can take the majority of our energy. Finding time for our dreams and aspirations is usually the last thing on our to-do list. But if it weren’t for the Lord, where would we be? He came to give us life and life more abundantly! This clearly speaks to creating the life that includes our heartfelt ambitions.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
When we hold these scriptures near and dear to our heart we wholeheartedly know that it is Christ who put these desires in our heart and we can stand strong and firm and accomplish all things through Him. By taking time for ourselves, we, in fact, will be able to be more effective in all the many roles we play.
As a psychotherapist I often suggest to my clients to write in a journal, meditate, or even participate in yoga. With these particular activities you will create a space just for you to practice self-care and begin a healthy and beneficial way of giving yourself the gift of you.
Take time to breath in the moment. Take time to smell the roses. By stopping and taking a minute to mindfully relish in the moment gives you an extra dose of peace and balance and a chance to regroup. Mindful living gives us the opportunity to create memories, observe, and gain insight. It is through our experiences in the journey of life that we become seasoned in our wisdom and have more to offer others as we give back to them.
Each of us was created with our own unique purposes and ability to influence others in our own way. By taking care of ourselves we increase our health and well-being making it possible to achieve an even more fulfilling life. With only 24 hours in a day, how much of those hours are you giving to yourself and self-care? You were wonderfully and beautifully created. Take care of you – His creation. Become your own best friend and enjoy time with you because it matters and makes a difference on how you do life.
