When, Not If

We all need healing: mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when.Jesus is Our Ultimate Healer and heals us right where we are at.

I was on the treadmill running at base pace (Orangetheory Fitness language - if you know, you know) when I felt it…pain. I was angry with myself. What did I do that I all of a sudden have a pain in the right side of my rear? I felt fine when I woke up at 4am to do my yoga stretching DVD before my 5am Orangetheory Fitness class.

I slowed my pace down and starting walking. The coach noticed me slowing down, which was unusual, and asked me if I was okay. I told her about my pain and she said, “I’m sorry, I know how that feels and it sucks. Do you want a foam roller to roll out a little bit?” I said no and continued to walk. I realized I would be walking on the treadmill for at least another 15 minutes. The pain wasn’t going away so I used the foam roller. It helped, but I could tell this was a deep tissue pain. When I got home, I sat on a tennis ball where the pain was and I could feel the muscle unwinding. I was sweating and shaking from the deep pain; however, I knew that’s what I needed to do to heal from the injury. I iced afterwards and I felt much better. It took a few days of slowing down, sitting on a tennis ball to get that deep tissue to unwind, and ice for the inflammation before I no longer had a pain in my rear. Deep tissue pain. I needed a myofascial, deep tissue massage, not a surface tissue Swedish massage. Getting to the deep tissue to relieve the pain is what I need in order to be fully mobile and not have pain when I exercise.

In John 4, Jesus meets a woman at the well and “reads her mail.” He tells her everything about herself. The deep pain of multiple marriages, rejection, and heartbreak. He tells her about the living water he has to offer, a relationship with him, the Messiah. She receives what he has to offer and goes on to the village to tell everyone about the Messiah and the living water that transformed her life. Jesus healed the woman at the well’s deep wound when he met her face to face.

Why do I go back to the “what did I do to cause this pain?” Why do I naturally blame myself? We all have those deep wounds. It may be from childhood, a relationship gone wrong, our own poor choice, or a violation of some sort. Sometimes things happen to us that we cannot control. At Created Woman, we believe we cannot be our best self unless we embrace the beauty of God’s healing power. By walking through and in His grace, we experience healing, strength, peace and restoration ultimately bringing life to others in our family and community. Allow God to heal those deep tissue pains. There may be sweating and shaking, but know that in the end your healing will help those around you get closer to Jesus, Our Ultimate Healer.

Reflection

  1. Share an area of your life where you currently have deep tissue pain.

  2. Is there an area of your life where you have been healed from deep tissue pain? Please share.

  3. How can you help others get some relief from deep tissue pain?

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”

(Isaiah 43:2 NLT)
