What Are Your Dreams Made Of?
When you hear the word dream, what comes to mind?
Merriam-Webster provides a collection of definitions for dream:
1. noun. a series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring “during sleep”
2. noun. a state of mind marked by abstraction or release from reality
3. verb. to consider as a possibility
4. noun. a strongly desired goal or purpose
What I find most interesting is that the majority of these definitions put dreams out of reach. The dreams our teachers and mentors taught us to have were always described in such a way that they seemed as if they were in the palms of our hands. At least that was the case when we were younger and when the world was ours for the taking. For some reason, a cynical pessimistic tone becomes associated with the word as we grow up. In my opinion, this is the time when we should put those dreams into action. Unfortunately, some of us (most of us) become discouraged by failure or a lack of opportunity. Possibly, we become discouraged by peers who believe it would cause less heartache to pursue a life that provides more comfort and less resistance.
When we are asked to honestly think about the dreams we could choose to pursue, the options are limitless. As a child of God, you have been given the strength to persevere when pursuing God-sized dreams. A question I would encourage you to answer as you choose your dream to chase is this: Whom does my dream serve?
Matthew 5:6-12 encourages us to “hunger and thirst for righteousness,” not recognition for our personal success. Even if the job you do for income is not necessarily your ultimate dream, there are so many opportunities to serve others while you pursue a dream of the heart. Jobs and dreams alike, they should be fulfilled by demonstrations of love and grace towards others. And by His design, He will lead you to His throne regardless of the job or dream you pursue. He has instructed us to “Let all that you do be done with love.” (1 Cor 16:14) Go to Him, and see what servant dreams He draws near to your heart.
Personal reflection:
1. How closely related are your job and your dream? What events led you to the job you have?
Don’t worry if they are not related at all. He is leading you to a place of congruency.
2. Outside of your job, are you involved with any activities that are done with love and that serve those in your community or around the world.
3. What support system do you have in place to encourage you and love you?
Goal setting and sharing: List 3 goals that you would like to accomplish (at home, at work, with family, etc) that will allow you to live out your purpose in regards to creating congruency between your job and your dream:
