Why'd You Have to Go and Make Things So Complicated?

Healthy Living Doesn’t Have to be Complicated.

In the words of Avril Lavigne, “Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated?” This is what I used to think when it comes to all things related to healthy living. We may not all feel this way, but I have a hunch I’m speaking to a lot of women when I say the health industry can be speculative.

Everywhere we look, we are bombarded with “Do this, do that, lose weight this way, get healthy that way, this is the best workout”. It’s easy to become overwhelmed! It’s awesome that there are so many options out there, but it can become tiring if you’re trying to figure things out.

When I see a woman looking fit, I want to know what each one does to stay healthy. But there are so many fit women out there, ain’t nobody got time for that!

We know we can’t do everything so what are we supposed to do? This is  a question I found myself asking often, which leads me to the next line in Avril’s song: “Life’s like this, you fall, and you crawl, and you break, and you take what you get, and you turn it into honesty and promise me I’m never gonna find you faking no, no, no.” There are many health resources out there that are good for us but others are faking. You know who isn’t faking? Jesus.

Our Created Woman Health principle states that “as created women, we are to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Being healthy physically is important so that we can run well with endurance and not tire or burnout but instead live a long, healthy life pointing people back to Jesus.” I read this and wondered, Where do I start? What are some practical steps I can take today toward my health? I am going to tell you what I did and I hope it helps you:

First, get in the word and pray! If you are feeling overwhelmed with your health pray about it an listen for God’s direction. It is very tempting to try a quick fix but take it from me, don’t do it. Figure out what void you are trying to fill and pray about it instead.

Next, remind yourself that being healthy DOES NOT have to be complicated. As I prayed about my health, God put the word “basic” in my brain. I know as women we aren’t encouraged to be basic but I’m telling you SISTER that it’s helpful when you’re feeling overwhelmed. God said, go do the basics, get some blood work done and see where it takes you. Long story short, I did the basics, saw a doctor, and found out it was what I needed to do all along.

Now I have a health plan that works for ME because I wasn’t trying to fit my unique self into any of those other plans. I worked from the inside to the outside not the other way around. If one of those health plans out there work for you, go for it girl! But don’t forget that God created you uniquely and your health journey should be unique too, because God knows exactly what you need!

  1. How is God calling you to get back to the basics in taking care of your health?

  2. How is your health journey unique to you?

  3.   Are there any areas of your life where you’re trying to fit your health journey into a “one size fits all”? If so, how can you step away from that and choose to do what is best for you?

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
 (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV)

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance he race that is set before us.  (Hebrews 12:1 NKJV)
