Resting Brunch Face

How being basic can help us in the search for our purpose.

I have a shirt in my closet that is perfect for me! It says, “Resting Brunch Face”. Anyone who knows me knows that I love breakfast foods, I also love humor and a good play on words. However, I’m glad the shirt says brunch instead of another word (if you know what I mean) because I like to keep it classy.

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “girl, we are talking about something serious, how can you be humorous about a topic as daunting as our purpose?”  Talking about purpose can feel a little taboo and create pressure or make us feel overwhelmed.

I’ve learned that it helps if we start with the basics and remember what God has called us to do. I’ve seen many posts on the internet about women being “basic” with their coffee and brunch photos. Women even get made fun of sometimes for this but I think doing what we love, even if it is basic, is a positive thing! So, I thought it would be a lot easier to read about this if you picture yourself grabbing brunch with one of your girlfriends.

If you’re like me, then there are several things that light your heart on fire. God created me for many things, but two things that get me excited which are helping people and singing. Have I found a way to combine the two? Nope. Truth be told, I am not even singing as much as I should be right now. Have many people told me to start in the church? Yep. Have I? Not yet. But that’s ok. I know my purpose is unfolding in those areas even if I’m not taking visible action right now because God is good.

God is calling me to take some internal steps first before I move forward. I know in my heart that I have a purpose in those areas and that is the light at the end of the tunnel I am moving toward.

At Created Woman, our purpose principle states: “We believe the greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without a purpose.” When I read that, I was hooked. Then, I joined CW and spoke to many women, who are now friends, about my purpose. My main focus was going for it in the areas where I felt stuck.

A friend gave me some good advice. She said, “when you don’t know what to do remember that God says your purpose is to Love God, Love People and Make Disciples. Another friend pointed out that insecurities were keeping me stuck and that I needed to lay down those things I thought I needed to do before going for it, like losing weight, at God’s feet! But nope, I wanted to hold on tight to those things.

I realized something hard and also great in that same moment. I needed to bring it back to the basics to create a firm foundation for my purpose. I am not a basic person, I am extra to the max!

You can only do what you know and when you know better you do better. So, here’s to having a resting brunch face and being basic. Loving God, Loving People and Making Disciples. If you choose to do the same, I bet parts of your purpose will start becoming more and more clear too.

  1. Are there any areas in your life where you feel you are overcomplicating your purpose?

  2. What does “Love God, Love People and Make Disciples” mean for you? How do you do this in your own life or how can you start?

  3. Is there a passion in your life that you feel God put on your heart to pursue but you haven’t? What’s one step you can take today towards your purpose in that area?

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 NIV)

Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; I was brought low, and He saved me. (Psalms 116:6 NKJV)
