Our Purpose is Easy

Our Purpose is Easy

When we Remember These Two Things

"Love God, Love People, Make a Difference." Those are the words written in big letters on the walls of Praise Church, my home church.  It leaves no question as to the purpose we are called to as the body of Christ.  Yet, there have been times I have allowed my attention to be stirred to one thing or another and miss the purpose God put right in front of me to fulfill.  If I slow down and listen to the words of Jesus, He made it so clear in His word.

In Mark 12 of the Bible, Jesus answered the question, "what is the greatest commandment?" He replied, "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all of your strength. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself."  It sounds so simple in words, but how can that be put into action?

Think back to the beginning stages of a new love.  I am sure he consumed your thoughts and conversations. Sweet gestures were done without hesitation. There was  a longing to spend to every moment together to know his thoughts, dreams, and hopes for the future. That is how the Lord longs for us to love Him, loving with all our heart.

As I seek to love God more and more, my heart has begun to change By loving others, I can shift from focusing on myself to focusing on Him  It has been as simple as giving up what I had to do that day to hold the hand of a friend who was in pain. Pausing to make a visit or take a phone call  to listen to a friend who is struggling.  Being observant and meeting a need for someone before it is even asked, or letting go of my selfish desires so I can serve and love my husband as God has called me to do.   Does it always come easily and naturally? Of course not! That’s probably why Jesus says it is the greatest commandment.

As I pray for God to show me his purpose each day, it does not always look like some big grandioso event. It could be as as simple as loving someone that day with a gift, gentle word or listening ear right where I am.  Even though it could seem simple or insignificant to me,  that simple act could be grandiose to one person, fulfilling the purpose God called me to do at that moment.

Reflection

1.     What are the main things that get in the way and distract you from loving and serving someone?

2.     What is one simple gesture you could do today to love someone and make a difference?

3.     What might happen if you did the one thing?

Goals

What are three things you can begin to do to love God and your neighbor with all of your heart, soul and strength?

What is the greatest commandment? Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all of your strength. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself.
