Design with Intent

Most industries evolve over time and change to fit the needs of the moment. In the world of Interior Design there is no difference. Design is becoming increasingly about behaviors and embracing everyday human experiences. When faced with a new space, it is important to first understand what function will be performed in this space as well as what feeling should be evoked while in the space. I think it is important whether you work with a Designer or you do a bit of decorating on your own that you ask yourself these questions. You will find that your answers become specific and intentional. Whether it is simply having a space for family breakfasts or a room where you can work from home, when you are intentional about what you want in a space you will not only use it more often but you will be happy working, cooking or doing whatever it is that space calls you to do. A well thought area in your home can lead to productivity and joy.

I have gathered a few examples of rooms, spaces and nooks that are designed with a specific purpose, drinking coffee, having breakfast, reading a book, working, etc. First, create this space of intent and second, fill it with items that inspire.

This home office offers the functionality of ample storage and organization. I love the counter height work table and comfortable upholstered chairs. It feels warm and inviting yet promotes productivity.

If you are like me and you love to dine outdoors, this is a great outdoor space. The kitchen allows you to cook while entertaining guests gathered at the dining table. Adding these elements to an outdoor patio adds to your homes living space and maximizes the additional square footage.

This is a great mud area and bag drop for busy families. Children and family activities are individually organized with locker style compartments and hooks. Baskets are a great way to corral all the little things. Add personal items like family photos and momentos to make it personal.

Every Kitchen should have a Breakfast Nook, in my opinion. I love to have a sweet little space to have breakfast and coffee in the mornings. The natural light wakes you up and inspires the events of the day. In this case the banquette and toss pillows make this space cozy and comfortable. Start the day with coffee and end it with homework. Lots of everyday tasks happen here.

I believe every room should have an oversized cozy armchair. This is the perfect spot to curl up with your Ipad or for story time with the little ones. Keep it simple with a throw and accent pillow. You can go in so many design directions with this accent piece. Use it to add color or pattern too. The intent with this chair is rest and relaxation. A special place to unwind.

I hope these images have inspired the Designer in you to create a space that's intentional for whatever you want it to be. Remember that this is unique to your personality and your everyday behaviors. No two spaces are alike. I like to remind my clients to keep things simple and personal and that will translate into a space you love and are inspired by. Home is what you make it.
