Don't Follow Your Dreams

Follow God's command instead…

I love to start my morning with coffee and Jesus.  I know it sounds cliché, but it is the truth.  A good cup of coffee, and hearing the words of Jesus speak to me right off the pages of His Word, delights my soul. Like any good girl would do, I  follow it up by praying God’s will for the day.  But then, it can quickly turn to the struggles in my own head. What should I do with this dream? Should I do this or that, should I go here or there? As I reflect on the questions for my dreams, next steps and daily choices God has for me, I realize He actually made it simple.   It’s me that makes it complicated.

As I study God’s word, I have yet to find where God says, “follow your dreams.”  I know that is shocking because I am a part of Created Woman, and we believe in big dreams.  But the command that  Jesus gives us in Matthew 28 is to go and make disciples. Yet, because that sounds overwhelming and feels too big  for me, I can quickly disregard this command and choose the Bible verses that I like.  But as a follower of Christ, I must be obedient to all His commands.

As I ponder every morning over coffee on what I am to do in every area of my life, I should have one question; how and where can I bring the light of Jesus to others?

My friends, I believe God has given us each unique gifts and talents that are to be used to bring glory to Him and  honor His purposes. Therefore, we must be mindful that our dream lines up with God’s Word. The direction of that dream should always point back to Jesus.  Is it obedient to the Word of God?  Is it being used as a light and reflection of Jesus to others? Where would it make the biggest impact for God’s kingdom?

I can still let this command overwhelm me at times, but I have allowed it to change my morning time with Jesus.  Instead of asking what I should do or where should I go, the request is now to bring opportunities to share the love of Christ today with the gifts and talents I have been given.

1.      How do you spend time each day reading and reflecting on God’s Word?

2.      How could this help you begin to understand God’s desire for you?

3.      How does the dream you have in your heart reflect God’s command in His Word?

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all of the nations.”

Matthew 28:19
