Do Sheep Have Dreams?

Do Sheep Have Dreams?

I’ve always been told I was a lot to handle. “Extra,” as the kids would say. Big delusions of grandeur, and the imagination to go with it. I started to think in my 30’s that perhaps I should try to put a damper on the drama and let go of the grandiose ideas, in an attempt to find some semblance of maturity, if not piety.

The Lord My Shepherd had quite the rogue sheep. I imagined an exasperated guardian angel doing double duty with one of those big Bo Peep hooks in both hands, running after me as I obliviously skipped off towards a ledge somewhere. I felt as though all my dreams and schemes were missing the mark, and I was aimlessly roaming a pasture looking for an adventure that the Lord could finally approve of, and I’d have a worthy dream.

Then it hit me. I have a shepherd. A good shepherd, who watches my antics in delight, gently steers me back into the fold, occasionally lets me wander into trouble so I learn how not to do that, and never guides me into disaster or leaves me to fend off the wilds alone.

I, and my dreams, are being guided by a loving hand with a genuine stake in my success. What I once thought of as a stern taskmaster who was upset at my inability to check off a series of boxes that would guarantee my success in a straight line, I now saw as a patient guardian, settled on a hill, here for the long haul of guiding my passions through the zigs and zags that get me from point A to point B.

It is a gift to dream big, and wildly. Some of the crazy dreams have stuck, and I am still working on them. The one about being a prima ballerina I can probably go ahead and can now that I’m 50, but I did get an awful lot out of the years of ballet classes, so I’ll count that one a success.

They say that heaven is full of the constant music of praise, never ceasing. Perhaps it is the score of those heavenly musicians who watch our lives unfold and are ever inspired by the adventures we are on with the Lord.

You may feel like a sheep aimlessly wandering a pasture, but heaven stands at the ready, bow strings in hand, to create the score of your life’s story. It’s a grand piece, including the heartbreak and discouragement, and the great moments of victory where you and the Lord conspire to bring to fruition all that is in your heart, and succeed in ways you could never have conceived.

I tried to tell you I have a big imagination. I hope I never mature out of it, because I get the feeling God kind of likes it.

1.     In hindsight, where are some things in your life that might have been the hand of The Shepherd guiding you?

2.     Do you have trouble feeling that your life is guided by a loving hand? Why or why not?

3.     Are there areas that you are feeling a gentle push to go towards, or away from? What are they?

Now may the God who brought us peace by raising from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ so that he would be the Great Shepherd of his flock; and by the power of the blood of the eternal covenant; may he work perfection into every part of you giving you all that you need to fulfill your destiny. (Hebrews 13:20-21 TPT)
