At a power lunch with a colleague today (the kind where we talk about business and how we can help support each other), I was asked, “Where do you see yourself in ten years?”

I thought about that question for a few seconds and straight from my heart to my mouth I exclaimed, “Pretty much in the same place I’m in now. Life is good.”

On the ride home I kept playing my statement over again in my head. Wow, I must’ve sounded like such a loser! The same place?! Who says that? Where’s my ambition…my drive?I’m pretty sure if I was interviewing someone to work for me (which, thankfully, this was not an interview luncheon) and they answered that they’d like to see no growth or change in the next ten years, I’d give them a quick PASS.

We are certainly living in a culture where ambition and drive are rewarded traits. We want things bigger, better, faster. And, I’m no exception. I’m one of the most ambitious people I know—not only am I a Realtor/Broker, I train and mentor a group of real estate agents and write books for agents that sell internationally. Oh, and I’m raising two children and keep their social calendars as busy as my own as well as write blog posts in my spare time!

Even if you don’t know me personally, you can probably gather from my quick résumé above that it’s not in my DNA to be complacent. Frankly, I shocked myself with my statement. While I’d love to see a handful (or two) more book titles under my name in the next ten years, and I certainly want my real estate business to keep flourishing, nothing feels better than to finally say, “I’m good. Life is good.”

If you’re picturing me in a Zen-like pose, full of peace and serenity, let me stop you right there. My days are hectic. I yell at my kids more than I care to. I have friends I’ve neglected to call in months. Life could be better. Bills could be easier to pay. I have not mastered life by any means.

But, something in my life has recently changed—for the better—causing my contentment. I’ve learned to finally put my trust in God and God alone.  

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” – Matthew 6:25-26 (NIV)

My identity is no longer in how many homes I sell or how many books I’ve written. It’s not in how many Pinterest-worthy play dates I can create for my children (my Pinterest score is a solid 0-0 by the way). I am content because I know that no matter where I am in ten years professionally, socially, physically, I am one of His.

“…for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothes yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:27-28 (NIV) 

It’s not easy and I haven’t found the secret to life. My hand is itching to pick up my phone, call my colleague and revise my statement. Wait! I meant to say that over the next ten years I’d like to continually grow in my relationship with Christ, with my children and in the other relationships in my life. To never stop growing and becoming a better person. Oh, and to write ten more books and to improve upon my already flourishing career. Yes, that sounds much better—much more like me. But, really, I know that it doesn’t matter what my life looks like in ten years, as long as I am still putting all my trust in Christ and am still finding my identity in Him.

Reflection: Are you holding on to something in your life that you need to give to God? Is it your career or a relationship? Maybe it’s an addiction? Do you trust Christ to help ease your burden and shift your focus to Him?
